As per legends the wife of Lord Shiva, Parvati had come to Goa in search of her divine spouse, who had left her alone in their mountainous home after a disagreement. On seeing her , Lord Shiva took the form of tiger. On seeing the tiger Goddess Parvati cried for help- "thrahi mam girisha". The words "mam girisha" transformed into the present word Mangesh.

In front of the entrance but slightly to the north stands the Deepa Stambha, the column of lights. It is the tallest and most imposing column in Goa and looks most beautiful on festival nights when illuminated with traditional oil lamps.

Monday is the weekly festival. On this day murti of the Lord is taken out, before the Aarti at night, in a procession in Palakhi accompanied by music.
