First Temple Built After 300 Years Of Portugal Rule

In the capital of Goa - Panjim is located the well known Mahalaxmi Temple. The unique aspect of the temple is that it is the first Hindu temple allowed to be constructed in Goa after 300 years by the Portuguese since they captured Goa in 1510.

Built in 1818 , the Mahalaxmi Temple is dedicated to the Goddess of wealth - Laxmi. She is the deity of the Panaji village. The peaceful form of Goddess here wears a linga on her head. The idol of Mahalakshmi here is made of black stone with four hands and is similar to the Mahalakshmi of Kolhapur.

The speciality of the Mahalaxmi Temple of Goa is its beautiful chowka which is famous for its grandeur and beauty. A lot of devotees come to seek the blessings of the Goddess on occasions like Dussera and Mahashivratri. The main festivals celebrated here are Navaratri and Chaitra Purnima.
