Old Goa is a historical city in North Goa, located at a road distance of 9 km from Panaji. The city is also called as Velha Goa since "Velha" means old in Portuguese. The city has a lot of historic significance and its remains are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Old Goa or Velha Goa was built in the 15th century by the rulers of Bijapur. This city served as the capital of Portuguese India from the 16th century until its abandonment in the 18th century, when it was popularly known as the "Lisbon of the East". Since it was the capital of the Portuguese, Old Goa houses several ancient magnificent churches and majestic buildings.

  • How to Reach : Buses run frequently from Panaji's Kadamba bus terminal to various locations of Old Goa. One can also hire auto rickshaws and taxis.
  • Churches : Old Goa has many ancient and historically important churches scattered all over it. The World Heritage Monument. Basilica of Bom Jesus dedicated to Infant Jesus is a must see. One of the largest churches in Asia, the Se Cathedral is a great historic marvel of 1510. Other important churches of Old Goa are - Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Church of St. Cajetan, Church of St Francis of Assisi, Church of St. Monica.
  • Museums : The Archaeological Museum of Goa set up in 1964 and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) exhibits some valuable antiques, sculptures, portraits, armory belonging to the Portuguese rule; sculpture of Hindu deities, sati and hero stones. The only one of its kind Museum Of Christianity in Asia is located at Velha Goa. Rosaries made of gold and precious stone, image of St. Francis Xavier, ivory image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd can be seen at this museum.
  • Beaches : The 7 km long and most popular beach of the tiny state - Calangute is located here. This beach is called as the 'Queen of Beaches' for its beauty. Other famous beach is the Dona Paula which is a haven for adventure lovers and offers some of the most photogenic views.
  • Wild Life : The smallest wildlife reserve of Goa the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is a must see. The reserve offers a botanical garden, a rose garden, deer safari park and a zoo and hence is a great picnic spot and loved by young and old alike.
  • Shopping : Markets of Old Goa are just the right place for those looking for handicraft items and antiques to take back home. You can also shop for the local drink "Feni" or pick up a bottle of Port Wine.
