12th Century Black Basalt Temple

The ancient black basalt Mahadev Temple is located at Tambdi Surla, 69-km off Panaji, in the Sangham Taluk of Goa. It is a 12th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and an important Hindu religious spot of South Goa.

The Mahadeva Temple in Tambdi Surla is the state's only prominent reminder of the pre-Portuguese temple architecture. This historic marvel is maintained by the ASI (Archeological Survey of India). The temple boasts of some fine relief's on the 'Shikhara' (spire) depicting a plethora of gods and goddesses.

The Mahadev temple is a fine example of the ancient Yadav style of architecture. The carved wall near the entrance, and the chiseled monolith pillars along with the Garbha Griha form the major parts of the impressive temple.

The Mahadev Temple is popular for its annual festival of "Gade", which is a three-day religious affair from Phalgun Vadya 1 to 3. Devotees believe that people can have Darshan of 'Devchar' at night during the festival and hence the Gade lures huge crowds even from urban areas of Goa. Similarly the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated with pomp and gaiety at the temple.
