Learn About The Interesting Olden Days

Goa - the word stands for beautiful beaches, golden sands and the shinning sun. Goa is a small state on the western coast of India. It was the first part of India that was captured by the Europeans and the last to get freedom.

In the olden days the state was called as Govapuri, Gomant or Aprant. The Arab sailors knew it as Sindabur, or Sandabur, and the Portuguese as Goa.

Many ancient Indian mythology also show the mention of Goa. Like the Mahabharata refers to Goa as Gomanta Kingdom or Goparashtra, "a nation of cowherds or of nomadic tribes".

Goa's history dates back to the 3rd century BC, when it formed part of the Mauryan Empire, ruled by the Buddhist emperor, Ashoka of Magadha. The rule later passed on to the Chalukyas of Badami, then later the Rashtrakutas of Malkhed and so on till it fell in the hands of the Portuguese in 1510. They ruled Goa for many years. In fact after India gained independence from the British in 1947, they refused to negotiate with India on the transfer of the state. On 12 December 1961, the Indian Army won over Goa and on 30 May 1987 it was made India's twenty-fifth state.

Thus the rich and interesting history of Goa makes it clear that the state was loved by many ruler especially for its natural beauty and the strategic location.
