Most Important Historic Monument

Gateway of the Palace of Yusuf Adil Shah is a historic monument located close to the Mandovi waterfronts in Goa. The Muslim King Yusuf Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur had constructed it.

Before the Portuguese took over the tiny state, Adil Shah controlled the land of Goa from Bijapur in Karnataka state. Before giving away Goa in the hands of the Portuguese he built a beautiful palace here as his memorial. The palace constructed was a mixture of the Hindu as well as Muslim style of architecture.

The Palace of Yusuf Adil Shah was a major tourist attraction of Goa until it was demolished in 1820 for construction of better houses. The gateway of basalt pillars holding up a horizontal lintel is all that is left of the once beautiful palace today. The palace, prior to destruction, was the residence of the Portuguese Governor until 1696.
