Fort Aguada : Goa Directory

The Oldest Light House Of Asia

Fort Aguada is a historic treasure of Goa. The fortress and its light house are valuable 17th century marvels built during the Portuguese rule. These historic wonders are located on the beach south of Candolim, at the shore of the Mandovi river of Goa.

The Fort Aguada is believed to be constructed in the year 1612. This was built by the Portuguese as a safeguard against the Dutch and the Marathas. This fortress was of great importance to the Portuguese. The fort is so large that it envelops the entire peninsula at the south western tip of Bardez. A freshwater spring within the fort provided water supply to the ships that used to stop by. This is how the fort got its name: Aguada = Water.

The 4-storey Portuguese lighthouse on the fort Aguada was erected in 1864. It is the oldest lighthouse in Asia. It was basically built to guide the European ships from far away.

The gigantic Fort Aguada and its massive lighthouse speak for themselves. These well preserved historic monuments are a great way to experience the ancient heritage of Goa.
