Largest Wildlife Sanctuary Of Goa

Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary founded back in 1969 is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Goa. The wildlife reserve is located 53km from the capital of Goa. It was formerly known as the Mollem Game Sanctuary.

The Bhagvan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary located at the foothills of the Wester Ghats. It is spread over an area of 240 sq. km. The place is lush green and very scenic. The major species of flora found in the sanctuary are Terminalia, Lagerstromia, Xylia, and Dalbergia.

Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife treasure possessing animal species like Gaur, Sambar, Panther, Leopards, Spotted Deer, Jungle Cats, and Malayan Giant Squirrels. The colorful birds commonly found in the national park are Indian Black Woodpeckers, the Malabar Pied Hornbills, Paradise Fly Catchers, Fairy Blue Birds, Drongos, and Wag tails. The famous inhabitant of the park is the King Cobra. Other snakes like python, Krait, Viper etc. have also been seen.

Apart from being home to exotic flora and fauna, Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary also has many other added tourist attractions. One of these includes the basalt rock formation known as Devil's Canyon, from where you can have a great view of the park. The magnificent Dudhsagar waterfalls in the sanctuary is a must see. The Tambdi Surla temple built by the Kadamba kings in the 13th century is a great excursion.
