The Church of Holy Spirit is a famous 17th century church located in the buzzing town of Margao in South Goa. The church is always crowded with visitors and is a fine example of the Indian Baroque style of architecture.
Church of Holy Spirit was built by the Portuguese by destroying a Hindu temple that stood on the spot in 1585. The historic marvel was destroyed many a times and re-built over and over again. The exterior of the church is brilliantly white-washed with towers on both sides, and a central dome structure. The interiors are finely carved from floor to ceilings. The altars dedicated to Immaculate Conception of Mary, St. Peter and St. Michael are heavily ornamented.
There are a good number of Old Portuguese mansions built in front of the church around a square called
Church Square or Largo de Igrega. Almost 3000 catholic families reside inside the church complex.
The masterpiece of the true Indian Baroque style, the Church of Holy Spirit in Margao is worth visiting. The
splendid architecture and the ambience of the place are sure to captivate your senses.
